What really ticks me off about this is that this is near my home. The Vekol Valley/Sonoran Desert National Monument area is the playground that I have used since I have lived here. Really, nothing has changed except a few people's attitude toward illegal immigration and a few political agendas. One thing for sure - the signs they post today will suggest that we go down there with caution. The ones they post tomorrow will just say that the area is closed to off road traffic. Look at Butterfield Pass as an example.

This is not about illegal immigration - that's a whole different problem. This is about our government's response to illegal immigration, which is to put up some signs.

Here is what I would like to do: Make a run in July down the same road where those signs are posted. I know the trail and have been there many times before. Let's get a couple of dozen rigs together and run a convoy. In fact, since it's summer and it's sure to be hot, I would think a night run would be fun. Provided we have enough participation, I am not worried about any danger other than what we always prepare for off road. There is safety in numbers.

If we bring along some of the media, it would certainly give us some good exposure as an off road group - provided, of course, that everyone behaves and doesn't do anything obnoxious. The best way I know of to counter media hype is to turn it back on the media.

I have a feeling that if we do nothing, they will close this area because it will be too dangerous for off road recreation.

What do you think? Who would be down for something like this?

How many "Off-Roaders" have been hurt or killed by these Undocumented Citizens you speak of?

Be careful out there you guys. I know how you feel about the problem. Keep your powder dry. 73's from Alabama.

Think there might be a reason the sign appears to be in English only ?
Or do I need my glasses changed again ? Things sure have gone down hill since a year ago.
At a loss for words, ones I can say here anyway. This should not be aloud to happen.

I'd be interested in exploring that area. I'm not sure about going in the heat of July though.

I'm ready and willing to wheel. Just say when. My FJ Cruiser has real good air conditioning, so July will be just fine. Anyone need a ride?

I would be up for a ride ... as long as the trail is 2WD friendly. :) If not, I may take KF7IZQ's offer for a ride. Either way, I'm interested.

Tempting... I've never been down there. I'd have to wait until August though.

It's a level 1 trail. No problem with two wheelers but some places may be prone to desert pin striping.

I would be fine with a little desert pin striping. :)

Anybody up for a little "target practice" with some AR-15s out in the desert?
