Here is a cool video that goes into a little of what the DXpedition people go through to give as that extra entity or new IOTA contact. It's expensive, sometimes uncomfortable, and sometimes even dangerous. Even the guys who go to the tropical islands still have to deal with rain, winds, bugs, etc. These guys had to battle ice storms and polar bears. This trip was in 2001. Really interesting video. One of the things on my bucket list is going on a DXpedition. However, I am sure it won't be anywhere there's ice.

I enjoyed that. I lived for 6 months one winter on the Northern Slope and (frozen) Beaufort Sea, 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle when I was a young man. We lived in a movable camp of metal trailers. We used an 11m SSB radio to communicate with a base camp at Deadhorse, AK. We had food and fuel for the generator flown out to us in a Twin Otter airplane. What they said is absolutely true; the only way to stay warm in that environment is to eat an insane amount of calories!
