View Full Version : Hotel Rock / Canyonlands expedition

Earlier this month my youngest daughter and I spent a week in the Manti-La Sal National Forest, the Abajo Mountains, and The Needles District of Canyonlands N.P. in southern Utah. We didn't touch pavement or civilization for five days. We went with four other 4WD trucks, there was a 60's Bronco, a Land Rover, an 80-series Land Cruiser, an FJ Cruiser and my FJ40 Land Cruiser. I beaconed APRS the whole way, and did pretty well in the back country except when we were down in several canyons (Mule Canyon, Ruin Canyon, Dark Canyon, etc.). For much of the time I was able to hit the linked 2M repeater on Abajo Mountain near Monticello UT. Here's a few teaser photos and a link to a lot more:

Thanks Virgil. On a related note, the forum won't let me change/upload my avatar picture either - is that just a function of post count, or something else?

Looks like fun. How's the elevation on this route, do you think it would be do-able in winter?


The beetle (FJC) looks a little out of place with all the classics... :D

Nice area I was just there in early May. Did you go through the Elephant Hill area? There is a bunch of neat stuff in the area to do; I have left a few pixs of a little hike I took to a slot canyon and one of where the Green and Colorado rivers converge. Okay I am new to this site and it only allowed me to add the pixs as an attachment, it wanted a url for the insert image function. At any rate let's see if this works.
