I bought a Signalink USB and hooked it into my netbook and Yaesu FT-897 for PSK31 operation. So far I have been listening to stations, but have not made a contact yet.

Don't be afraid to make some contacts...PSK-31 is great fun, and works great for less than ideal setups (i.e. mobile). I have a Signalink too and have been very happy with it. I run it in the truck with my IC706MKiiG and in the shack with my old Kenwood TS-520 and it works fine with either rig.

The nice thing is once your hardware is set up for one digital mode, you're good to go on all of them just by installing the software. So be sure to try some of the other things that are available. I rather enjoy operating Hellschreiber...

I just got started on digital modes and made my first PSK31 contact last week. I am using my Flex 3000 and Fldigi. All the serial ports are virtual audio cables using VSPMgr, VAC, and DDUtil. Trying to get all of those programs to work together is like trying to decipher the Rosetta stone, but it's a lot of fun once it works.

You did good :)

I am approaching PSK-31 qso #1000

Would be interesting to see your signal on the waterfall.

A lot of people is under the misconception that PSK-31 is QRP only, but use the power needed to complete the qso.

What you really need to watch is your audio out on the computer, but if you use your ALC control wisely, you will always have a clean signal, no matter how much power and audio out you run

This is a snapshot of WA6OVP, he usually run low power (15W).

This is mine, take by WA6OVP, I am running 100W, full digital processor (95%).

I set my radio to 100W power from my Yaesu FT-897D. From what I understand, when you switch it to the DIG mode from LSB/USB, the power is actually adjusted by the Signalink USB box and setting the ALC. I adjusted my TX level on the Signalink USB to where it was just under registering on the ALC meter. I think I'm doing it right.

Vic, that sounds like you lived out of boxes for a few years. I grew up on a farm and didn't move around much. My wife and I moved to AZ to be closer to mountains. We had enough corn fields and wanted to experience something different. We enjoy 4 wheeling quite a bit. I am quite active on http://4x4ham.com. Many pictures of our trips there. BTU

We have been married for 51 years so I don't think I will make it back to Phoenix. Iowa is a nice place to like you just have to like snow a lOOOOOT!!1 I like in the north part of Phoenix around the fair grounds.
How long have you been on PSK? I enjoy it a lot.

I have a hearing problem so it is a great mode for me. I have never worked muck SSB . I do talk to the local ham that way but I work contests for fun you will have to try it RTTY is a interesting mode. It is all software now I worked it with a model 15 printer a long time back

The only contest I have worked is Field Day 3 years now with the 4x4 group. I mostly use 2m FM in the Jeep and also APRS. I'm in experienced with HF, but intend to spend some more time on the bands. I was looking at the WAS awards and might try to acheive some of those contacts. BTU

When I started using PSK I didn't thinl I could get a WAS but it took a little less then one year. The had states to get are SD and SD I didn't think there were any Ham there but I found some on 40 meters. It is a lot of fun get setup with LOTW not ease but it is worth it. E QSL is giving out awards also.

K0FBV DE K7VZ
I'm actually waiting on a post card to register with LOTW. Also filled out the form online for eQSL and will log my contacts on both. I had a friend just complete his WAS in about a year and I believe his last state was Wyoming. I can see how those north central states can be a little harder to get just based on population. BTU

K7VZ de K0FBV K0FBV I got a number of states working contests. RTTY contester are real good about sending QSLs I still like cards but that is the old day I guess. I spent a lot of time on the air It keeps me out of the bars. HIHI

YouTube has been great. There are videos showing how to setup on there. I also had help from KC0NNT and N7IYT to configure my setup. It's easy to get working looking back, but taking those first steps can also be confusing. BTU

I can post mine;););)

Just kidding.......

Just a thing....

Often the signal "drift"
If you get report that your signal drift, try to calibrate your sound card.
Your PSK-31 software probably have a sound card calibration feature.
Use it, but be aware that it is a slow process that may take hours.
So best thing is to do it over night.
