View Full Version : "Go Kit"
I am wondering what you keep in your Go Kit. I am considering the essentials that I may need to keep handy in case I need to get out of Dodge fast with my family or if I am needed for emergency communications. Any suggestions would be helpful.

It depends on what emergency your planning for. Mine is modular, I have a bag for if I am headed out to help the community, another bag of clothes and necessities if the family comes along. The bags include extra clothes, steel toe boots, gloves, food, water, more water, fuel, something to keep the kids entertained (There could be a lot of down time.) the ham radio to keep me entertained, guns for protection and hunting, basic cooking supplies, more water. Something to write with, medical bag (not just a first aid kit). Then pull everything out twice a year to restock or evaluate whether you really need it. If you go camping, you are mostly prepared.
At this point your walking the line of keeping it simple to going overboard. Less is more.

Great info! Usefulness, functionality, necessity and portability are all on my mind as I look to prepare a kit. I like the idea of going modular. I don't think there is a way to plan for every eventuality and I am thinking as I start this project that I want to start with the basics. I am thinking a minimum of 3 days of food/water, communications gear, clothing, first aid, handgun and a place to go that is out of the way that I am familiar with. Any good survival guides out there that anyone has found? I'm not trying to prepare for the apocalypse but it is always good not to be caught empty handed and unprepared.

This is probably one of the better survival books I've seen in the past few years:
