Are we going to run a CW station?

Hopefully. I'm drawing a blank on his name/call right now, but I spoke to a guy after the net 2 weeks ago that was going to bring his Yaesu FT-450 up and work CW.

Edit: Randy beat me to it. Steve was going to bring his radio and work CW.

I'm good for any mode, but CW is my favorite.

What more do we need? Are you talking about equipment? I've got quite a bit of stuff I could bring.

Is the road to the FD location 4x4 only? It looks mild enough on Google Earth. I may be in the Payson area and could stop by if the road is ok for a 2WD pickup.

Since Randy is planning on hauling his pop-up to the site I'm pretty sure it's just a standard dirt road, no 4WD required.

Virgil,
which logging software will you use?

Last year we used N3JFP's FD logging program. Easy and cheap.
Used it for years.

OK folks as of now I have the Friday prior off and should be heading up sometime that afternoon (after I wake up). Not sure where I'll be racking out, may bring a cot and sleep under the stars. I'll have my HF rig in the Jeep so I can monitor various freqs while others are working with the main unit(s). Any other goodies I can bring along?

For those who also have a thing for astronomy there will be two items of interest - on Saturday morning as the full moon is setting it will be partially eclipsed, probably not very noticeable but I intend to look at it anyway. Also there is a comet that is moving thru the morning sky right now, it probably won't be visible without some type of magnification (binoculars at least) but as with the eclipse I will be looking for it.

Just checked again and still no fire restrictions on Coconino NF. It looks like we will have plenty of radios to operate from. Does anyone else have a generator they can bring? What else might we need for operating items?

Three Forests will Implement Fire Restrictions on 6-23-2010 For Immediate Release
Date: June 21, 2010
Contact: Coconino Supervisor's Office - 928-527-3600

Williams, AZ —Officials with the Coconino, Kaibab, and Prescott National Forests will implement fire restrictions on Wednesday, June 23 across the three forests. Due to high fire danger, these restrictions are deemed necessary to protect public health and safety and prevent human-caused wildfires.

The restrictions will prohibit fires, campfires, charcoal, coal or wood stoves outside of developed campgrounds and limit smoking to within enclosed vehicles or buildings or in developed campgrounds. Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns, and heaters meeting safety specifications will continue to be allowed.

In addition, campfires are not allowed at the designated dispersed camp sites within the Prescott Basin on the Prescott National Forest. Metal posts identify designated dispersed sites with a number.

Please remember the following campfire safety:

•Make a fire only if you have a shovel and sufficient water to put it out. Never leave your campfire unattended.
•Avoid making a campfire during the windy part of the day. Winds usually diminish at night when a campfire is welcome. Keep your campfire as small as practical.
•To make sure your campfire is out, drown with water and stir with dirt, making sure all burned materials are extinguished. Feel with your hand to make sure it’s out cold.
The fire restrictions will remain in place until the Forests receive significant precipitation. Violation of the prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000, imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. Fireworks are always prohibited on National Forest land.

For additional information on fire restrictions on the Coconino National Forest, please call (928) 527-3600, on the Kaibab, call (928)-635-8311 and on the Prescott, call 928-777-5799 or (928) 443-8000. For additional information about fire restrictions on public lands in Arizona and New Mexico, call toll free 1-877-864-6985 or visit http://gacc.nifc.gov/swcc/.

Ok, it looks like I can make it this weekend! I'll bring 897D, G5RV jr, 35' push up pole, pop up trailer, generator, etc....
I also sent the details out to the AZ Land Rover Email List as there are a number of new hams over there and some adept astronomers!

I will be bringing my FT-450, 12-AVQ 20-10m vertical, 50 feet of coax, and CW paddles. Anyone who wants to work CW and doesn't bring a rig along can be the relief operator on mine.

The only thing I don't have is a generator so I will need to plug into someone else's. I will bring the power supply and an extension cord.

I will also bring a laptop with a copy of N3FJP logging software - that way we can log CW contacts as they occur and either merge the files later or upload them separately.

Everyone bring bug spray. I just heard from a group that stayed on Milk Ranch Point last weekend that the gnats are out to eat us alive.

We will be approximately 600 miles NNW of you guys, and not to much dirt in between so I think we should try to work each other on 6/2m USB.
We will operate 40/20/6/2m
SSB and PSK31

Was up in Pine today and was very nice temperature wise and not too bad on the bugs, however the extra 1000ft elevation can make quite a difference.

I am going to bring my FT817 and tuner for some QRP. I will bring an outbacker and a BuddiPole and we can give it a go.

Hot off the az511.com web site: SR 87 North-South & Bush Highway Saguaro Lake Road - CLOSED due to serious fire. It looks like SR87 is closed at the Bush Highway from looking at the map. It is a good idea to check on the status of this closure before you start the drive north. - Tom

For anyone leaving tonight or tomorrow morning, check the ADOT site. Hwy. 87 is currently closed at the Bush Hwy for a fire.

"The restrictions will prohibit fires, campfires, charcoal, coal or wood stoves outside of developed campgrounds ..."

Are we going to be in a developed campground? (I think not, but want to ask, just in case)

N7TX

az511 says the closure stretches from MP 199 (Bush Hwy intersection) to MP 235 (which is at SR 188). It also says the duration is June 24 from 230pm to 945pm. So, *maybe* it will be opened back up late this evening - we'll have to check back later. If it does not, it sounds like the alternative route is to go thru Globe then up around Roosevelt Lake (SR188) to Rye and then up from there.

Let's hope SR 87 opens up tonight.

Guess it depends what part of the Valley you're in. I'm in East Gilbert, and the distance is within 2 miles of being the same for either route. If you're North or West Valley, then I-17 to Hwy 260 is definitely faster.
