The 4x4 Ham Field Day site has change from where we were located last year. It is still in the Milk Ranch Point area NW of Payson, AZ, but we are going to be a little further east this year. Please check back to this thread before departing as there is still a possibility we have to move due to forest closures or other circumstances.

Everyone is coming from a different location, so use the Google Maps link below to determine best route. From the west valley and Phoenix area, you will probably want to take I-17 north through Camp Verde. Mesa and east valley folks will probably want to take Hwy. 87 through Payson.

Click here for Google Maps and enter your starting point under A on the left. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=AZ-260+E%2FZane+Grey+Hwy&daddr=%2B34%C2%B0+26%27+25.03%22,+-111%C2%B0+21%27+41.62%22&geocode=FaS6DQIdgJRb-Q%3BFV6EDQId58Fc-Q&gl=us&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=34.451405,-111.43409&sspn=0.01665,0.026157&ie=UTF8&ll=34.195901,-111.681519&spn=2.137626,3.348083&z=9)

From the intersection of Hwy. 260 and Hwy. 87, it is approximately 2.5 miles to the FR300 road turn off. Look for the brown sign and turn right. Once you are on gravel, it is approximately 4 miles to the Field Day site. We will have signs out from this point. About 100 yards from Hwy. 87 on FR300, you want to keep right onto FR218 and across the cattle guard. After a couple miles, there is another intersection where you will want to keep left, continuing on FR218. If you get to a 2nd cattle guard, you've gone too far. Call us on 147.52Mhz simplex.

Here's a map with a lot of red arrows. haha.

Thanks Kurt. I plan to beacon W7AZO over RF once we get up there.

I hate to even ask since this is obviously a 4x4-kinda group, but how accessible is that location to those with little-to-negligible ground clearance? I can't tell from the sat imagery just how much of that route is pavement.

It's a graded gravel road. Most vehicles should be ok. RV, camper, trailer, 2wd friendly. I wouldn't take my Honda Civic back there, but then again, I have problems with it dragging on the sloped curb backing out of my driveway.

I have seen trucks pulling giant fifth wheels on this road. I have also seen minivans and Hondas. Makes we worry about buying a used car some times! Take it slow and you won't a have a problem. Also it maybe posted here somewhere but they will be monitoring 147.52 simplex.

You guys might be able to make better sense of the map and closure data here (my experience is very limited) but this is either REALLY close to the field day spot, or possibly inclusive of it...

The closure does not include the field day site. click here (http://http://www.4x4ham.com/showthread.php?1001-Tonto-National-Forest-Closure) to see map of closure area.

We are on Coconino National Forest. So far, closures are only for Tonto National Forest.

Was dropping off my son at camp this weekend off the controll road and there were lots of areas closed for fire danger. There is still open area just may need to be flexible. Just FYI Thanks, Mark
