Default 2012 Field Day - The Results

Official ARRL results are posted in the December issue of QST magazine.

The 4th Annual 4x4 Ham Field Day is in the books! Great work everyone.

    Some of the highlights:
    -Over 50 people in attendance.
-CW dominated. Phone conditions were less than favorable compared to previous years.
-392 total contacts which is a few short of last year, but total score will be higher as CW dominated.
-No bear attacks, but 2 bobcat sightings.
    -Lots of dust.
-2 new Technicians and 1 Extra upgrade.
-Paul cooks some killer tri-tip and chicken.
    -No 6m magic.
-We almost worked all states. Now to just get them confirmed. Too bad most clubs don't upload FD logs to LOTW and eQSL.
-NTS messages passed with TBARC group near Flagstaff.
-W1AW bulletin was copied successfully via PSK31.
-The satellites continue to elude us on FD.
-4 lbs. of bacon consumed Sunday morning.
-The Payson Roundup sent a photographer. I will try to get a print copy of any article/photos published.

Preliminary scoring looks like we scored 1010 of the 1350 possible bonus points.
300 CW contacts, 3 digital contacts, 89 phone contacts. 695 QSO points.
So, that should score us with 695 with 2x multiplier =1390 QSO points.
    1390+1010=2400 final score.

Thanks to all of the members at the 2012 ARRL Field Day. Came up Saturday morning from Pine, first chance to meet F to F with folks from the club. Learned a lot and had a chance to help set up a couple of antennas - fun stuff. Everyone was friendly and willing to answer questions.
On Friday I traded my Land Rover in on a 2013 Rubicon which should be delivered in 8 - 10 weeks, so I was also interested to see how folks were mounting antennas, etc on their Rubi's. Will be without wheels until the new one arrives

That was fun! It was a challenge learning how to use the tuning dial on a radio after going for years without one but it's like riding a bicycle or throwing a boomerang - it comes right back to you.

Interesting. The phone bands were hopping down here, at least when I was on.

I did about 90 SSB dinking around, mostly 40/20m.

I heard that Payson had their own group at the park.

I regret that I was unable to attend but I did try and find you blokes on the HF bandz. 20M was packed solid here from the states right up to and into you bloke's wee small hours on the Sunday morning but not a whisper from W7AZO, a few other AZ stations along with at least most if not all call areas but conditions were a bit depressed to down here. There were a few stations heard on 15M and 40M but 20 was the one that was firing.

Glad you all had a great time by the sound of things and congratulations on the turnout, the upgrades, the bacon, the score and the whole effort.

We had a snafu and our W7AZO entry does not show up in the ARRL records. http://www.arrl.org/news/2012-arrl-f...ay-logs-posted I've contacted the ARRL and am in the process of resubmitting our logs.

In the meantime, I noticed that the NTS traffic was never posted.

Also for record, our information table.

    And the Antenna educational activity.

Did anyone take pictures of the solar and battery setup? Also looking for the youth contact photos, if any.

I have confirmation that W7AZO has been entered. The ARRL page will not be updated, but we'll be listed with the results in the December QST issue.

The December issue is out. 2013 will be our year to push our scores even higher! Goals? Top AZ entry?

    40th out of 135 in class 1A.
14th out of 53 entries for AZ.

I'd like to get some more CW ops for next year. I know Todd, KF7NLX is working towards that. If any others are so inclined, we've got a number of experienced CW ops in the group that would be more than willing to help you work toward that goal. New Year's is right around the corner...what better way to kick it off, than by committing to learning CW?

For next year, top AZ station is a great goal; however, we'd have to spend a significant amount of time planning out our antenna farm if we're going to run 1A again. I think the low dipoles hurt us this past year. I'd like to get my 43' vertical back in use with a decent radial field to bring in the "DX".

More kids would also be good. They don't have to be yours...just make sure you acquired them legally.

I think other than that, we've pretty much got the bonus points category licked. The rest is a matter of improving our operating skills on the radio to pull in the contacts. We could also entertain going back to a 2A setup? Given the size of the op, we could put CW/Digital guys on one radio, and SSB guys on the other. I'd only go this route if we have enough participants to make sure the schedule is filled at least 75% of the time.

Who want's to build a rhombic for this year's FD? I've always wanted to and it would be cool just to say we did it.

It's a blast operating and a blast being there. I am in the middle of the CQ WW DX contest right now - a couple of hundred contacts into it - and taking a break. There is no reason why we can't run up a big score with multiple ops. I would like to see us run simultaneous CW/phone/digital or separate bands. It would take some ops making commitments to being there.

I would like to see a Flex field day station. I know that's a challenge with the computer power needed - we would probably have to go somewhere that we could run the generators more than just a few hours. Plus, it would have to be cleaner.

If I can get all the pieces put together, my TJ will have a complete HF station operating inside. I still need to get a second battery and charging relay and then we're set.

I know my 2stroke generator is not the ideal for power, we did use it this year for a few hours during the evening. However after it was shut off several people applauded at its being shut down, it does add "some" noise to the RF spectrum but not nearly as much as that 1930's one Deter let ya use last year.
Maybe some of those Honda generators as there quieter not only to the ears but to the RF bands as well.
Also is there anyway to interface a tablet to the flex? Like an iPad or other similar type devices?

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!
