I've been an avid hiker and backpacker all my life. Last year I bought a Jeep Cherokee and have been having fun exploring the mountains and desert around San Diego. This means I've been spending more and more time far away from the nearest cell tower, which gave me an excuse to do something I've kind of wanted to do since I was a kid: get ham radio! I got a tech license last month and installed a Yaesu FT-1900 in the XJ. I've recently been reading up on APRS, and I'm interested in other uses of amateur radio in the backcountry. And my 12-year-old son got his call letters today, so now I've got a radioman when we're out on the trails!
