Baby Doll Ranch Loop

Baby doll Ranch loop (AKA East Verde River Trail) is a stock 4x4 friendly trail north of Payson. This trail is very scenic and this time of year we might see some Fall colors. For those of you that have the Arizona Backcountry Adventures book by Peter Massey this trip can be found on page 428 with the return to Payson via the Mazatzal Wilderness Trail page 431. The Crakerjack mine featured in the book has since been blasted closed. Barring any issues we should be done by 3:00. I will be monitoring Mt. Ord 146.920 and 147.520 simplex.

Having ties to Payson I had always known this to be Baby Doll Ranch. But researching history on the area it is the Doll Baby ranch named for a little girl that died and was buried there in the late 1800's. Interesting! Grab a lunch and head out to Payson on Saturday to run this trail. Hope to see you up there.

Four vehicles made it up to Payson today for the Doll Baby Ranch loop. We had two Paul's; N1HX and KE7YIL, and two Steve's; KF7RTR and myself K7AZS along with Paul's wife, Barb and Steve's son Torry. The weather was beautiful and the trail was as described, stock 4x4 friendly. We had lunch at the river crossing next to the Doll Baby under century old trees. Paul (N1HX) made the comment that the wind rustling through the trees was worth the trip alone. I think we all agreed. Great trip guys. Thanks for coming out.

I spent the Thursday-Saturday doing SOTA (Summits on the Air www.sota.org.uk) activations in the Show Low area, however I had to cancel my final two peaks on Saturday due to access restrictions on the reservation and had to come up with other plans, unfortunately I would of been about 30 minutes late getting to the meeting point according to the GPS. I thought about calling on the Mt Ord repeater and trying to catch up with you all, but didn't want to interrupt the event that was going on.

I ended up going across FR300 to Baker Butte and SOTA activating it. I did hear you'll a couple times on simplex but it was very rough copy.
I don't have the book mentioned, so I'm not exactly sure where you were. Does anyone have a GPS track of the trip or was anyone running APRS?

Sounds like a fun trip. I wish I could have made it.

We had a fun time, thanks again for setting it up, Steve. It was a really pleasant Fall day to be in the high country.

No aprs. I have an interest in aprs but have not followed through with that interest. Life has somewhat gotten in the way!

We were in the Payson area all day. The trail started a few miles north of Payson, looped around to
the northwest and back southeast into town, about 21 miles total.
