OK, well my name is Steve and I just got a ham setup installed in my 1995 Isuzu Trooper for trail use, after it became apparent during outings with the Midwest Overland Society that CB was inadequate in range. This is my Trooper in the Black Hills:
My ham setup is a Yaesu FT-1900R with a Comet SS-680SB antenna mounted on the ARB bullbar. I also have a Baofeng UV-5R handheld. Basic stuff to be sure, but I am into this for utilitarian purposes, not so much a hobby (not that there's anything wrong with that). I just received my call sign less than a week ago, and look forward to learning more about using repeaters etc.
Howdy from AZ.![]()

Ham radio is great for offroading, as you already know. But it is a great hobby, you should look into the other things it offers. We use several modes besides FM phone, SSB, CW, RTTY, PSK, etc., some are voice modes, some are digital, we can send pictures over Slow Scan TV. We can use our radios and our skills for emergency communications and public service events. Don't think of ham radio as a replacement for CB on trail runs, it is so much more than that! Join a local Ham Radio club and you will see that Ham Radio has a lot to offer.
Congratulations on your new license!

Thanks. While at this time I don't see myself getting into ham as a hobby, it is very early days and down the road maybe I will get hooked, who knows?
