I recently downloaded the app for my iPhone, but haven't registered yet as I questioned if there any advantage over just having VHF/UHF capability in the truck (besides the obvious ability to select the node you want) given that min 3G reception is required and the far majority of the time when touring or wheeling I'm out of cell range! Is this argument valid?
2007 Nissan Patrol GU ST 3.0l, 3" Lift, 3" S/S ex, Autometer boost & Pyro gauges, STT 285/70/17, HF->UHF txcrs, dual wheel carrier, roof racks, cargo barrier, dual batteries, Waeco 60l fridge, 1500w inverter, plus!

I installed it and activated my account. I've used it a couple times to log into a net I'm interested in using my laptop when I'm in another room away from my shack. I log into the repeater node and can listen in (or participate) without having to fire up my own radio.

Other folks on the repeater use it to connect and join the net when they're out of town, using their PC.

As far as off-roading...hmm...yeah...only thing I can think of is it's quicker to use to get to a particular repeater node than DTMF...

Haven't tied it to my own rig and thus far, only used it to see that I could.

I have installed the Windows version on my laptop and the iOS version on my iPhone 4. I use it to join a weekly net that is hosted on a repeater that I can't reach from my home due to terrain. I have been able to join the net even when I am out of the area as long as I have an internet connection. I have joined the net from hotel rooms in Europe, and with the internet connection on my iPhone I joined the net while I was on a city bus in Berlin. I also talked to K7VZ once--about a year ago; we haven't been logged in at the same time since.

It would be interesting to use echolink for a net. I've used it a couple time to talk with friends who can't be reached by repeater. Could get a net with anyone off the board going no matter their location.

We have done this on IRLP a few times, and will probably schedule another one soon. Keep watching the Upcoming Events section on the home page. That is where it will be posted.

    Offroad and on the air.
