4x4 Ham Special Event from Titan Missile Museum in Green Valley, Arizona

W7AZO --- Whiskey Seven Alpha Zulu Oscar

Operating from the 80 foot tall discone antenna 15 miles south of Tucson, Arizona.

The Titan Missile Museum is the only publicly accessible Titan II missile site in the nation. There are tours of the underground missile site where visitors can see the 3-ton blast doors, the 8-foot thick silo walls, and an actual Titan II missile in the launch duct. During the tour of the launch control center, they also experience a simulated launch and more!

Discone antennas are a no gain broadband band antenna. The SWR (standing wave ratio) is typically 2:1 over the full range of 6 MHz to 30 MHz. It was built by Collins Radio Company and operational from July 1963 until the site was deactivated in 1982.

Are there any campers interested in taking their RV? I'm considering going down on Friday night, spending Saturday at TMM, and returning home on Sunday. There's an RV campground 15 miles south of TMM. http://www.deanzarvresort.com/ The next nearest campgrounds are in Tucson. Here's a KOA on the south side of Tucson. http://koa.com/campgrounds/tucson-lazydays/ What do you guys think?

Edit: Upon further research, the Lazydays KOA is $79 a night. For that money, I'd rather stay at a Motel 6. I'm probably going to make reservations at DeAnza RV. They list $36 for full hookups on their web site.

There should be some dispersed camping options nearby. I'll ask a couple buddies who are more familiar with the area and see what they suggest.

I was kinda' thinking of camping, too. I'll know in a week or so what my schedule looks like for that weekend.

We ended up booking Friday and Saturday night at the Vagabond Inn for about $60 per night. It's closer than any campground and about the same cost as camping and gas would have been. http://www.vagabondinn.com

TMM has enough ground, they need to setup a campground!

Probably heading down Friday and may look to run a trail or two. I will probably stay on BLM land and drop by on Saturday for a few hours. I believe one or two hams from AARC are planning to head down as well.

Bring your camp chairs and a lunch.

I'm packing my Yaesu FT-897, tuner, laptop, signalink, battery, generator, 2 ez-ups, and some extra water.

Thanks to Randy K7NNT, Sergey NS6W, Joe KE7WHE and his wife, and Evan and Marcia K7AZM for attending the 2017 4x4 Ham Titan Missile Museum Special Event.

We logged 56 stations and have already confirmed 3 additional states for a W7AZO TMM WAS. With the Boy Scouts JOTA happening, I must have talked to another 12-15 kids in addition to the 56 total. I know Randy chatted with quite a few as well. We worked mostly 20m phone with few contacts made on 15m. Thanks to Sergey, we fired up FT8 in the afternoon and worked a few DX stations.

Sorry I couldn't join the party. This was not my week for vehicles. My Jeep wouldn't cooperate to make this trip and to add insult to injury, I borrowed my brother-in-law's truck to pick up some things I needed and I wound up with a flat on the I-17. Made it off the highway and called AAA. They had no problem telling me they could have someone out to help me within 4 hours. Made a call and had a buddy run a floor jack and wrench out to change the tire within 30 minutes. So much for AAA Roadside Service. I'll call them tomorrow and give them a piece of my mind.

Glad you guys were successful in logging some new states. Looking forward to next year!

W7AZO had a good signal on 20m here in BC at first. I was getting ready to answer your CQ from Randy, but was beaten to the punch by a JOTA station. So I listened to him talk to a group of scouts. Conditions changed and JOTA stations clobbered you after that.

At least they answered for you. On Friday I only got the experiencing high call volume message. If Good Sam hadn't gotten rid of Platinum+ I would be switching but I want 100 mile towing rather than closest repair shop.
